Where the journey began

Young woman writing in nature.

When I decided to write a novel, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. The choice wasn’t entirely mine, it was more like fate, or a sick joke brought forth by the eagerness of ego. The jury is still out.

It’s not to say that I haven’t enjoyed the adventure. It’s been a deep dive into the unknown of stringing words together and invigorating nonetheless. The story leapt onto the page and exploded, what started as a simple poetry prompt grew into something more. It grew into something unexpected.

If a story is in you, it has to come out.
— William Faulkner

There were 6 parts to the first telling of the story. The characters had no names, there were vague descriptions of their physical appearances. It was emotional, heavy and full of longing. To recognize a stranger as someone as something more, an instinct, an inkling of the heart. It was dark and enchanting.

Curtains of snow blankets the hills as it falls effortlessly from the frozen sky above. Not a whisper would be uttered as the shadow people slipped from their hell. The trees protested softly echoing their disdain for the touch of darkness that fell.

It didn’t take long to realize that the story demanded more. The characters had a story to tell and as a writer it’s my duty to do them justice. And so I wrote. I wrote the story out on my phone, sitting in a truck at a local park. Day in and day out. When I had 8 hefty chapters I transplanted myself to a computer and continued.

The story took a year and when it was complete and sat over 100k words. A feat that I celebrated with astonishment. Something so many set out to do and so few accomplish. I had never in my wildest dreams thought I would be successful, but this was a dream I’ve had since I was a young girl. Now, it’s become a reality.
